uBlox MAX-6Q vs. MAX7C Comparison

The uBlox MAX-7C GPS module is supposed to bring a power reduction during operation. The sensitivity seems to be equivalent though I didn’t make an exact measurement of TTL or similar.

To get a power consumption estimate I’ve measured the currents with two different batteries:

PecanPico3 with Si4463 and MAX-7C
I [mA] U [V] P [mW]
GPS acquisition 60 4 240
GPS & transmit 180 4 720
Sleep 10 4 40
Transmit only 130 4 520
GPS acquisition 70 3 210
GPS & transmit 200 3 600
Sleep 10 3 30
Transmit only 140 3 420
PecanPico3 with Si4464 and MAX-6Q
I [mA] U [V] P [mW]
GPS acquisition 80 4 320
GPS & transmit 160 4 640
Sleep 10 4 40
Transmit only 90 4 360
GPS acquisition 90 3 270
GPS & transmit 200 3 600
Sleep 10 3 30
Transmit only 140 3 420

Note that my meter has only a resolution of 10 mA. So it seems that the MAX-7 saves about 60-80 mW of Power during acquisition. This is not huge, but it may let your tracker run a few hours longer.

MAX-6Q and MAX-7C GPS modules can be purchased from Hab Supplies.
